The AGON Program

The “Agon, an Olympic Legacy” initiative, an educational and social program of activations by Athens Olympic Museum, supported through an exclusive grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

The program’s mission is to promote the values of Olympism, while educating its participants on the history of the Olympic Games and sports, and highlighting the inextricable link between Sports, Culture, and Education.

The AGON program encompasses activations and initiatives designed for a variety of audiences and age groups: children and students, young refugees, visitors with partial or total vision loss, caregivers, young people, families, older adults. It’s for all those who want to experience what it’s like to be an Olympic or Paralympic champion, for visitors who want to explore the history of Olympism in its birthplace.

The design of the program is based on the Museum’s thematic pillars of “Agon” (the Endeavor) and the Olympic & Paralympic Values of Friendship, Respect, Excellence, Determination, Inspiration, Courage, and Equality. Through the initiatives and activations that are part of the program, the Museum aims to educate its audiences on the nobility of the Endeavor once combined with the Olympic Values. By applying experiential and active learning approaches, the activations and initiatives engage the audiences towards identifying themselves and fostering their philosophy.

Accessibility to all and inclusivity are critical for AOM, hence the activation’s implementation design includes a multitude of means and media, utilized in a variety of means of engagement, both in and out of AOM’s Main Exhibition Halls.

Individuals, and small or large groups may enjoy the activations of the initiative designed to take place in the Main Exhibition halls and Educational Area, while an Outreach Program ensures reachability and inclusivity. Among the beneficiaries may be students, young adults, elderly, families, tourists, young refugees’ shelters, sports clubs and teams, children’s hospitals, expats, athletes, educators, visitors that experience visual impairment.
